People like this still exist? [Nov. 3rd, 2004|07:08 pm]
Hey, I haven't updated in awhile, I'm terrible at it. I need to vent.

I was at work today, discussing with a co-worker about the results of the election. He's middle-aged, born and raised in Cobb county, and is a true Southerner down to the bone. In several weeks of working next to him, I can't say he's the brightest bulb, but he is decent at what he does. Today, he was talking to another guy and mentioned that he was disgusted by the fact that the voters of Illinois voted "a damn towelhead into Senate". I figured out he was talking about Barack Obama (who is the son of a Kenyan and an American and has nothing to do with Muslims, Islam, or "towelheads"). He said he would never vote for a man like Obama, even if they agreed on every major political issue, solely because "his name sounds too much like Osama". Then he went further on his point, saying that the only people fit to be the President of the United States are white males. Now, since my mother is Korean, you can imagine my surprise. I asked him if I ran for President and he fully agreed with me on every political issue, if he would vote for me. He responded without pause, "I wouldn't, on basis of you not being 100% white."

This conversation really made me sad for humanity and almost ashamed to live in the South. It makes me sad that he doesn't think I could handle that position solely because my eyes look a little different than his. I know people who hold opinions like these are out there, but it's hard to swallow when it's the person who sits next to you at work every day.

Having recently taken a class on racial discrimination in the workplace, and having read about another automotive company that gave one single claimant $750,000 in hush money, you can imagine the gears turning in my head. But him losing his job, or me being awarded any amount of money can't replace the damage that had been done, and it won't ever change the way he feels. I steamed over this for the rest of the whole day, and I still can't get it out of my head. It hurts that much. I know some of you who read this do know how this kind of treatment feels, and I wish everyone could feel it just once to experience how sad it truly is.

For what it's worth, I did explain to him that I was sad that he couldn't see past my race, and he did apologize for offending me, but maintained that his beliefs stood the same. That's his right to feel that way. I can only thank God that people like this will never be a part of any organization that I plan on leading.

Been awhile.. again.. [Sep. 27th, 2004|08:38 pm]
[mood | ecstatic]
[music |Shadows Fall - Enlightened by the Cold]

So it's been a long time since I updated this thing.. thought I'd give it a shot.

Miranda and I had an awesome time in Hilton Head from the 17th-20th. Beautiful island.. but pretty expensive. The beaches are nice, but the water was icky. Might be from the hurricanes stirring up all the crap in the water. Next time I think we're going somewhere in the Gulf, maybe Pensacola or Destin or St. George Island. Oh yeah, she made me kill a conch so she could have the shell. I felt bad. But it was really nice to spend that kind of private time with someone who makes me happy beyond words.

Work has been work.. with the exception of not having to work at Chevrolet anymore!!! WOOHOO!!!! In essence, I've completed the training program I was in. It was supposed to last 2 years, but it only lasted a little over 1.. what can I say? I'm damn good at what I do. :) My company is working on forecasting for 2005 (gross profits, sales, expenses, etc) all this week, but when it's all over, I will be an official employee of our Lexus Roswell parts department. The title is Parts Specialist. So that's awesome. I enjoyed my time at Chevy but it taxed me. I dealt with a lot of attitudes and crap like that. The parts department atmosphere is a lot more laid back and I get a chance to interact in a more customer-service driven environment. I like that.

This weekend is the LSU game and I am psyched!! We are doing a low country boil. I think our goal this year is to tailgate with something other than steaks, and I think it's working great! I found a great recipe off McCormick's site, but I think I may jazz it up with a little bit of spice.. not too much, but enough to make you reach for your beer more than usual.

That's it for now.. hooray for new job!!!

money and fajitas [Sep. 1st, 2004|08:42 pm]
[mood | mischievous]
[music |Mastodon - I Am Ahab (holy crap, this is insane!)]

Bills suck.. especially transfer fees. I got raped for almost a total of $400 in utilities over the past 6 weeks. It sucks, but hey, it's still cheaper than living alone, believe it or not. I need to pay rent tomorrow.. I picked up a wireless router yesterday.. and a cordless phone.. and two new CD's.. there goes $121. $20 of which I get back in the form of a rebate. It's only money, right? ugh. And tomorrow, more money will be spent. I need a small portable grill, food for the tailgate (hooray for fajitas!!), and I'm sure something else will arise.

Recipe for awesome steak fajitas, going off the top of my head..

1 whole skirt steak or flank steak (2-3 lb)
Juice of 3 limes
3 or 4 cloves of fresh garlic
Cumin
Seasoning salt
Fresh black pepper

Skirt and flank steak are tough (but very flavorful) cuts of meat, so it needs a little help in tenderizing. Take a fork and stab the steak a bunch of times on both sides. Juice the limes and crush the garlic cloves, and throw them into a big plastic bag with the steak. Let it sit overnight or longer. Get a grill started nice and hot. Season it with cumin, seasoning salt, and fresh black pepper. Throw it on the grill and cook it to medium rare, or about 5 minutes per side. Slice it up into strips. Throw the strips onto hot tortillas with whatever toppings you want.. I like grilled onions and peppers, cheese, sour cream, Spanish rice, and sometimes salsa.

Miranda, see what you have to look forward to?!?!?!?!?!

oh, and a pre-happy birthday to [info]kungfu1037!!!!!!

Another day at home, with Olympic results. [Aug. 25th, 2004|06:57 pm]
[mood | lazy]
[music |Mazzy Star - Fade Into You]

So I stayed home today thanks to my sore throat. I went to the doctor. Turns out I have a case of acute pharyngitis.. a sore throat. Thanks doc, there goes $25.

I've been pretty bored all day. I happened to stumble across some Olympic results in weightlifting. Man, some of these women are beastly!! Like this one. That's your Olympic gold winner Tang Gonghong, a 25 year old freak of nature from China who is 5'8", 265 lbs, and can whip your ass. She lifted 672 pounds in two lifts to win the competition by 22 lbs. The women's judo competition also featured some monstrous women who could probably kick Ms. Gonghong's ass.
